I've been reading your blog and would love to have our metal garage doors done in the faux wood. I think it looks much more realistic than the brand new doors they sell that supposedly look like wood. But, I haven't been able to find anyone with experience around here so we're going to give it a go ourselves, practicing on some embossed wood grain closet doors.
We purchased SW Adhesion Primer ($50!), satin Tatami Tan for base, satin Java to go on next, and then for the 3rd paint coat we intent to mix Java with Black Bean (which has a brownish cast) one to one and mix it with...water?? How much water do you usually use for his coat? Same proportions as the Java and Black or more? We also asked if they had a waterbased Spar Urethane and they sold us one. But now that I am looking at it, I think it has oil in it as its Minwax brand and it says to clean up with mineral spirits etc. I assume I should wait until I can find the Modern Masters "Masterclear". If I do find that Maserclear, should I use as my glaze medium instead of the water? Is it better than water if I have plenty on hand anyway? Same ratio as the water when mixing with Java and Black?
I've look around a lot online and your doors/projects look the best!

All manufactures of garage doors say on their websites that the warrenty of their doors will be void if an oil based product is used. You are the one who needs to do research so why don't you call the garage door manufactures like I did and find out what you are talking about. The top clear coat I use is called masterclear by modern masters and Disney uses it on their murals, and other places that need that sort of protection.
You should really do at least a little bit of research before you sound off on something you obviously don't know about.

You really should know what you are talking about before providing suggestions. The failure is not due to oil based products! It using a adequate top clear I don't care how or what is used the clear coat will etch and deteriorate over time. And will happen to yours too if the clear coat is not re applied at least yearly... Get a clue you really believe your own crap...

I think the masterclear is a much better product than the varathane. http://modernmasters.com/products.asp?mode=group&gid=16 previous is a link to their website. A lot of stores that sell Benjamin Moore paint sell the modern masters line of products.
