I had a small job to match two gates (one on either side of the house) to the new wood front door. The gates were painted a celery green. The photo below shows the completed job with the left gate. My challenge is to paint the gates to match the front door not only in color but have the wood grain look similar also.
So the first thing I had to do was paint a good base color over the green. This very warm golden color was the perfect choice.
Then I painted the first coat of wood grain color.
The the second wood grain color gets painted on after the first has dried and after that dried I applied a clear top coat to seal it for extra protecion.

I have a question about your glaze mix. You mention in previous posts about using your sealer as your glazed medium. You also say you use just water in your videos and on the blog. I assume that means you can do both successfully? Do you choose one over the other for a reason?
I pretty much only use water now days. I used to use the sealer when I first started doing this technique but have since settled on just plain old water.
Thank you! Your directions are perfect. My doors came out looking great. I have a question for you. I tried several different tapes- (green painters tape and green frogtape) both not sensitive tape, and they would barely stick to the door even though I used low lustre finish paint. They kept falling off and were a mess to work with. Any idea why this is happening? I seem to have the opposite problem of the tape sticking too much and pulling the paint off- I can't get it to stick! I have another door to do yet and the garage, and my parents front door, so I am hoping I can figure something out. Thank you for this great blog and info! Been enjoying it alot.
I always use either the yellow frog tape or the blue tape with the orange in the center as the dellicate tape. Sometimes it comes up but usually works. If there is any mositure on the door or tape it won't stick. You could try the regular blue tape but be careful.
