It looks pretty nasty at this point. First thing I did was to scrub the doors with a wire brush to get off all the flaking of paint. After I got off as much as I could I cleaned the doors and then applied an acrylic primer. Then when the primer dried I applied 100% acrylic latex paint. I use SuperPaint by Sherwin-Williams. In this next picture you can see that I have painted back in the center panels of the single garage door. The basecoat color that I used is a SW color called Tatami Tan. Then for the wood color I used another SW color called Java for the first pass. Then I mix the Java with Black in about 1 to 1 ratio and apply the second coat of a very light glaze of this mix. I use water to thin the paint.

Faux Paint Garage Doors to look like Wood
I just completed painting a set of garage doors to look like wood. There is a double and a single garage door. Both of these doors had been previously painted to look like wood but a coat of an oil based spar urethane had been applied and that ruined the doors. Never use an oil based product on your garage doors. All manufactures of garage doors say on their websites that using an oil based product will void the door's warrenty. The reason is an oil based product will crack and peel taking off the original door coating exposing the metal of the door to the elements. Take a look at the first three pictures to see the damage an oil based product can have on metal garage doors.
This last picture shows the completed door. If you look to the left side you can see where I have finished the center panels in the double door. At this point after the garage doors are done being painted to look like wood I apply 2 coats of a 100% acrylic clear coat called MasterClear by Modern Masters. The added black hardware adds a nice touch.

When you say ModernMaster, do you mean http://www.epaintstore.com/Modern-Masters-MasterClear-Protective-Clear-Topcoat-satin-semi-gloss-metallic-interior-exterior-where-to-buy.html?click=srclick <---? Whats better, this paint or a Var polyurethane that im assuming I can buy at lowes? Thanks, Joe
I think the masterclear is a much better product than the varathane. http://modernmasters.com/products.asp?mode=group&gid=16 previous is a link to their website. A lot of stores that sell Benjamin Moore paint sell the modern masters line of products.

The door looks awesome. I have purchased the paint to attempt to recreate it on my own door. May I ask what techniques you used in applying the paint to get the look you did? Thanks Sam
send me your email address and I will send you written instructions.
You really should know what you are talking about before providing suggestions. The failure is not due to oil based products! It using a adequate top clear I don't care how or what is used the clear coat will etch and deteriorate over time. And will happen to yours too if the clear coat is not re applied at least yearly... Get a clue you really believe your own crap...
All manufactures of garage doors say on their websites that the warrenty of their doors will be void if an oil based product is used. You are the one who needs to do research so why don't you call the garage door manufactures like I did and find out what you are talking about. The top clear coat I use is called masterclear by modern masters and Disney uses it on their murals, and other places that need that sort of protection.
You should really do at least a little bit of research before you sound off on something you obviously don't know about.
I've been reading your blog and would love to have our metal garage doors done in the faux wood. I think it looks much more realistic than the brand new doors they sell that supposedly look like wood. But, I haven't been able to find anyone with experience around here so we're going to give it a go ourselves, practicing on some embossed wood grain closet doors.
We purchased SW Adhesion Primer ($50!), satin Tatami Tan for base, satin Java to go on next, and then for the 3rd paint coat we intent to mix Java with Black Bean (which has a brownish cast) one to one and mix it with...water?? How much water do you usually use for his coat? Same proportions as the Java and Black or more? We also asked if they had a waterbased Spar Urethane and they sold us one. But now that I am looking at it, I think it has oil in it as its Minwax brand and it says to clean up with mineral spirits etc. I assume I should wait until I can find the Modern Masters "Masterclear". If I do find that Maserclear, should I use as my glaze medium instead of the water? Is it better than water if I have plenty on hand anyway? Same ratio as the water when mixing with Java and Black?
I've look around a lot online and your doors/projects look the best!
Write to me at wallscomealive@tampabay.rr.com and I will send you the written instructioins. It also has some video but the video is not too great.
